Most people looking for a local service never reach anybody’s website. They search, they look at three results on a map, and they tap call.
Picture the actual moment. Someone is standing in their kitchen looking at a cracked driveway, or sitting in a car park with twenty minutes spare. They pull out a phone and type the service and the town. Google shows a map, then three businesses underneath it with stars, hours and a call button.
They tap one. Usually one of the three. Often without opening a single website.
That block of three is the highest-value real estate in local marketing, and the thing that puts you in it is free, sitting in your account right now, and probably half finished.
The listing and the website do different jobs
Businesses spend months agonising over a website and about eleven minutes on their Google Business Profile. That is backwards for anyone customers can drive to, because the two assets answer different questions at different moments.
| Google Business Profile | Website | |
|---|---|---|
| Answers | Are you open, close, and worth calling? | Are you the right company for this job? |
| Seen | Before anyone clicks anything | After they have already shortlisted you |
| Decides | Whether you make the shortlist at all | Whether you win against the other two |
| Costs | Nothing | A real budget |
You need both. But if the profile is weak, the website never gets its turn, because nobody ever gets that far.

What actually moves a local listing
Whitespark has run an annual survey of local search specialists since 2008, with 47 of them in the 2026 edition, scoring 187 separate factors. The pattern worth knowing this year: review signals and behavioural signals went up in weight, while on-page and link signals slipped slightly. Translated out of jargon, Google is leaning harder on what customers do and say than on what you write about yourself.
Completeness, and the categories nobody checks
Every empty field is a reason to show somebody else. Hours, service area, services list, attributes, description, and photographs all matter. The one that quietly does the most damage is the category. Your primary category is the strongest single lever on which searches you appear for, and plenty of businesses picked something vaguely right during setup years ago and never looked again.
Reviews, and the replies underneath them
Recent reviews beat old reviews. A profile with a steady trickle looks like a working business; forty reviews that all stop two years ago looks like one that closed. Reply to all of them, including the bad ones, in plain language and without arguing. The reply is not really for the reviewer. It is for the next person reading.
Behaviour after they find you
Calls, direction requests, clicks through to the site, photo views. Google can see which listings people actually engage with, and that feeds back. This is why complete profiles with real photographs of real work tend to compound: they get engagement, engagement improves position, position gets more engagement.
The consistency thing
Your name, address and phone number should be identical everywhere they appear: profile, website footer, directories, social pages. Not similar. Identical. “Suite 4” in one place and “Ste 4” in another is the kind of small mismatch that quietly costs you.
Our Google rankings completely transformed after working with Wavefront. We went from page five to page one in just a few months. The SEO strategy they built for us is still delivering results every single day.

What to do this week
- Search your own service and town in a private window, on a phone. Note who is in the three and what their profiles have that yours does not.
- Open your profile and fill every empty field. Check the primary category properly rather than assuming.
- Add photographs of actual completed work, not stock images. Keep adding them.
- Ask your last ten happy customers for a review. Reply to every review you already have.
- Fix your name, address and phone so they match exactly across the profile, the website and anywhere else you are listed.
None of that needs a developer and none of it costs anything. It is an afternoon.
What not to expect
Nothing here works overnight, and anyone promising the map pack in a fortnight is describing something that will not hold. Profile edits can take days to settle. Review and photo momentum builds over months.
Also: do not buy reviews, do not stuff keywords into your business name, and do not create listings at addresses you do not operate from. All three are detectable, all three risk suspension, and a suspended profile is a far worse position than a mediocre one.
Start with the private-window search. Whatever sits in that block of three is your actual competition, and everything else follows from looking at it honestly.
